The seventh season of premiere of “America’s Got Talent” (Mon., 9 p.m. ET on NBC) all eyes were on the newest member of the judging panel, Howard Stern. Replacing the outgoing Piers Morgan, Stern proved to be somewhat less grouchy, while at the same time far more enthusiastic about a few of the acts.

“I forgot how much I love Howard Stern,” tweeted @OptiMISS_Prime.

“Never was a fan of Howard Stern but gotta say I’m loving him on the show,” added @ShammyCW, expressing a point of view widely shared on Twitter.

Stern, the Sirius XM shock jock famed for his naughty ways, replaced Piers Morgan as the third judge on the show, which has for years been among summer’s top-rated. The other judges are Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel.

Before the premiere, speculation had centered on whether Stern’s R-rated sensibility – porn stars and flatulence are among his favorite obsessions – would fit with a prime time broadcast talent show. Based on the initial reaction, viewers seem to think so.

On Monday’s show, Stern was sometimes surprisingly warm, at one point climbing onstage to dance with Simply Sergio, a singer whose wobbly audition was redeemed by an impromptu version of “God Bless America.” But he was also at times brutal. When one unfortunate contestant reported this his parents had passed away, Stern cracked: “Did they die of embarrassment?”

Not everyone is offering the thumbs-up, of course.

“Reading a pile of positive laudatory reviews of Howard Stern on America’s Got Talent tonight,” tweeted @mediageek. “Did we see the same show?”

But that was a minority opinion. Many viewers seemed to believe that NBC had succeeded in reinvigorating the show.

“Adding Howard Stern to #AGT seems to have been the best thing @NBC has done this year,” tweeted @TheJustinColman.

What did you think of Stern on “AGT”?

Hollande in as French President

Francois Hollande is sworn in as president of France, becoming the first Socialist leader in 17 years to occupy the Elysee Palace.

Mr Hollande said that he was fully aware of the challenges facing France, including the debt crisis and weak growth.

He will later name his prime minister and fly to Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Mr Hollande wants “a compromise” over the German-led focus on austerity as the way out of the economic crisis.

On Monday, the value of stock markets and the euro fell amid continuing political uncertainty in Greece.

The chairman of the eurozone finance ministers, Jean-Claude Juncker, insisted on Monday night that they would do “everything possible” to keep Greece in the euro.

Mr Juncker said he looked forward to the swift formation of a new Greek government, nine days after the general election.

But he also warned that Greece had to continue the “significant efforts” already made to restructure its economy despite these policies having been rejected by a majority of voters.

Bionic Eye Invented To Help Restore Sight By The Help Of Light Power

Bionic Eye Invented To Help Restore Sight By The Help Of Light Power.

A retinal implant – or bionic eye – which is powered by light has been invented by scientists at Stanford University in California.Image Detail

Implants currently used in patients need to be powered by a battery.

The new device, described in the journal Nature Photonics, uses a special pair of glasses to beam near infrared light into the eye.

This powers the implant and sends the information which could help a patient see.

Diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinal pigmentosa result in the death of cells which can detect light in the eye.

Eventually this leads to blindness.

Wiring eliminated

Retinal implants stimulate the nerves in the back of the eye, which has helped some patients to see.

Early results of a trial in the UK mean two men have gone from being totally blind to being able to perceive light and even some shapes.

However, as well as a fitting a chip behind the retina, a battery needs to be fitted behind the ear and a cable needs to join the two together.

The Stanford researchers say their method could be a step forward by “eliminating the need for complex electronics and wiring”.

A retinal implant, which works in a similar way to a solar panel, is fitted in the back of the eye.

A pair of glasses fitted with a video camera records what is happening before a patient’s eyes and fires beams of near infrared light on to the retinal chip.

The creates an electrical signal which is passed on to nerves.

Natural light is 1,000 times too weak to power the implant.

The researchers said: “Because the photovoltaic implant is thin and wireless, the surgical procedure is much simpler than in other retinal prosthetic approaches.

“Such a fully integrated wireless implant promises the restoration of useful vision to patients blinded by degenerative retinal diseases.”

The implant has not been tested in people, but has been shown to work in rats.

Greece’s moderate says No Unity government.

‘No Unity Goverment’

In Greece Many People In the Support Of The No Unity Goverment.

Hopes of building a unity government in Greece have taken a hit with the opposition instead demanding immediate elections, despite Prime Minister George Papandreou narrowly winning a parliamentary vote of confidence.

Syriza is refusing to attend coalition talks because it will not back any government which supports austerity.

Image DetailThe Greek president has summoned the four main parties for talks on an emergency government in a last-ditch effort to avoid new elections.

Major European markets fell by more than 1.5% because of the uncertainty.

By 13:00 GMT, shares on the Athens Stock Exchange had dropped by 3.5%. The London FTSE-100 index was down 1.7%, the Frankfurt Dax fell by 1.95% and in Paris, the Cac-40 saw losses of 2.27%.

The euro stood at $1.2861 – its lowest level since 23 January.

‘No unity government’

Greece was in political deadlock on Saturday, as the main opposition party in the crisis-wracked country resisted calls by Prime Minister George Papandreou to form a unity government.

Papandreou argued that a broad-based government was vital to keeping the country in the eurozone, but the opposition insisted instead that immediate elections be held, dampening hopes of any quick solution.

Calling on Papandreou to resign, Antonis Samaras, the leader of Greece’s conservative New Democracy party, said a vote should be held by early December; a scenario dismissed by the prime minister as “a disaster.”

Image Detail

The conservative opposition has called for immediate elections

Samaras said he would accept the huge European Union bailout plan designed to keep nearly-bankrupt Greece afloat, but not the additional austerity measures Papandreou says would need to accompany it.

Greek President Carolos Papoulios announced he would hold talks with Samaras on Sunday. The president can summon political parties for talks if no progress is made on important issues that lead to political gridlock.

Narrow victory in confidence vote

In a dramatic parliamentary debate in the early morning hours of Saturday, Papandreou won a knife-edge vote of confidence and indicated he was prepared to step aside for the good of the country.

It was a first in the constitutional history of Greece with parliament expressing confidence in a prime minister so that he can soon resign.

But potential dissenters had made their approval conditional on Papandreou opening the way up for a successor and also, ideally, to accept the formation of a government of national unity.

The prime minster seemed to accept these conditions. In his speech shortly before the vote in parliament, Papandreou declared himself ready to accept and promote the idea of a broad, cross-party government in talks with the country’s president on Saturday.

Papandreou also mentioned that he was willing to talk about being replaced as the leader of the government. But he did not explicitly say that he would step down.

Greece in trouble

  • 17 May: State opening of parliament; deadline for formation of new government
  • 6 May: Election held; voters desert main parties and back anti-austerity groups; no party in overall control so coalition needed
  • 12 Mar 2012: Second bailout signed off involving 130bn-euro loan and massive debt write-off
  • 10 Nov 2011: Technocrat PM Lucas Papademos installed after social unrest and economic chaos bring down Pasok government
  • 2 May 2010: EU/IMF agree 110bn-euro bailout in return for austerity measures after Greek debt downgraded to junk status

Days are numbered

Venizelos may have his eye on Greece’s top seat

Although little seems impossible in Greek politics of late, only a very few people believe that Papandreou has a realistic chance of remaining in power.

The Greek premier sparked international uproar on Monday when he announced a referendum on the latest 130-billion-euro ($180 billion) bailout agreed by eurozone leaders last week. However, the government announced Friday that the referendum would not go ahead.

After the referendum fiasco, it appears that Papandreou is no longer acceptable even to some within his own party.

Opinions differ about who and what is likely to come after him. The ruling Socialists are in favor of a government of national unity involving all political parties but preferably under their own leadership. Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos appears keen to take over the role of premier.

The conservative opposition, which is playing an increasingly important role in matters, is calling for a transitional government of experts which would clear the way for fresh elections within six weeks.

Papandreou has offered a compromise: a transitional government stocked with politicians of a high pedigree who were able to get the summit deal and the austerity measures through parliament. It would then lead the country until elections by March 2012 at the latest.

Tough choice

If the conservatives under Samaras continue to refuse to take part in any government of national unity, it would leave the Socialists with no choice but to form a shrunken coalition with the populist right and the economically liberal “Democratic Alliance” of former Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis – seen as a rather pointless exercise.

The leftist opposition signaled that it was particularly upset about the vote. “They want us to express our support for a government that is not even there anymore,” said leader of the moderate Left Alliance Alexis Tsipras.

Many are asking the same question: Why did Papandreou even go into a vote of confidence if he apparently intends to stand down?

Many protests against the government have taken place

History repeats

That likely stems from the conventions of the Socialist party. A similar agreement in the past saved the Socialists from a division and gave Papandreou a boost toward power. In 2004, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis’ term was cut short when he resigned and stepped down as party chairman – a post he handed over to Papandreou.

After a government interlude of the conservatives, Papandreou’s party won the parliamentary elections in 2009 – which involved Papandreou surprisingly pushing aside his former mentor Simitis and becoming prime minister.

Back then, calls for a referendum were the reason for the conflict within the party as well. Shortly before the European elections in 2009, Papandreou promised a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty – against the will of the steadfastly pro-European Simitis.

It would be a nice irony if Papandreou stepped down only to have his predecessor Simitis take over again, as possible head of a transitional government.

Syria Rebels ‘kill 23 soldiers’ in Rastan

Twenty-three Syrian soldiers were killed in the town of Rastan on Monday in heavy clashes with rebels who destroyed three armoured personnel carriers, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said dozens of others were wounded in the city, in the restive Homs province.

Earlier, opposition sources said nine people, including a local rebel commander, were killed in heavy army shelling of Rastan.

Image Detail

Three troop carriers were destroyed in fighting, the UK-based group said.

If confirmed, the attack would be one of the deadliest suffered by security forces in the 14-month-long uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

It comes after government forces launched a fresh assault on Rastan at the weekend, despite a UN-backed nominal ceasefire that was supposed to come into effect just over a month ago.

Meanwhile, the EU has imposed another round of sanctions on Syria – the 15th so far – in an effort to increase pressure on the government.
